Soul Sister Swing began in 1985 when three friends who had performed together in bands decided to put together a group of their own. Harmonies were their passion so they selected songs from the Andrew Sisters, the Boswell Sisters and the big band era of the forties.
Their friends nicknamed them the "Soul Sisters" because of their habit of breaking into song whenever they were together. The "Swing" was added to describe the style of music.
Amidst coffee and laughter, they rehearsed every day to perfect their act.
Their first gig was for family and friends and (predictably of course!) was a great success. Within a year they were performing on TV and traveling throughout Australia presenting floorshows for corporate clients and service clubs, and as support for overseas artists.
Twenty-two years on, Carol and Gail, both Torquay residents, are still with the group and enjoying every gig.
Carol McAlister has a family and teaches musical play group to toddlers at Spring Creek House She also leads the choir at Torquay PS. Her husband Rob joins in with some great blues harp whenever the band plays locally.
Gail Lambert works full time as a secretary and is also vocal coach for the "Sweethearts" backing vocals at Matthew Flinders Girls College.
Gayle Burrill has been singing with SSS over the last 15 years filling in but is now a full-time member. Gayle started her love for singing when she was a child singing with her sisters known as "Chantel". They became quite popular in the 80¹s and early 90¹s. Gayle met her husband Pete, a drummer, while they were on a "Rock around the clock" tour of Australia. Gayle teaches singing and also teaches classroom music to her students at Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College. There isn¹t much time for rehearsals these days, but when the girls get together their experience and love of their work means they can learn new songs with ease. Gail's back deck is the usual venue complete with wine and snacks. Soul Sister Swing's enthusiasm and energy on stage is obvious. With their great sound and professional attitude they continue to attract regular bookings for corporate and private functions. |
